Public art commissions by sculptor and Corner Store founder Kris Swanson include the portrait of Monterey Institute of International Studies founder Remsen Bird, installed at the university in April of 1999; The Cowboy, installed at the California Rodeo grounds to celebrate the opening of the Salinas Sports Center in 1997; and the California Grizzlies, commissioned for the 150th anniversary of California's admission to the United States, installed on the grounds of the original capitol of California, Colton Hall in Monterey in 2000.
